Doing the Banal Without Losing the Bigger Picture
Meet Susan
Susan Tanner is a law professor who uses AI to streamline the parts of her job that are necessary but not life-affirming.
How She Runs On AI
Susan uses NotebookLM (Google) to keep herself and her research organized. She loves that she doesn’t have to be quite so diligent about file names and folders, because NotebookLM does a better job of keeping track than she does.
Her #1 AI Hack
“Create a project folder called "bio" and keep your updated CV/Resume there. Whenever you're working on something worth remembering, make sure it touches that folder. Your accomplishments stay current, and you're never scrambling to reconstruct what you've done when it matters most. An added bonus, genAI is often better at promoting us than we are at self-promotion”
How AI Changed Her Routine
Susan has nearly stopped getting flummoxed or stuck on ideas. She thinks this is what high-powered men in the 1960s must have felt like. When she's working through something difficult and wants an outside perspective, she runs it through chat. She might not always love or adopt the ideas she gets, but it helps her to work through the problems.
Her Advice
Embody the sandbox ideal. Don't worry about learning everything about AI, and don't worry about getting it right on the first try. You won't break it. Most importantly, don't let the tech dictate the terms — “start with what you want help with, then ask AI if and how it can help with that”.
